NeroScience - Cannabinoids and the Human Body
Cannabis, Hemp and Cannabinoids
Cannabis and hemp have been used for their healing properties for millennia. The first documented case of their use dates back to 2800 BC. The active compounds within cannabis and hemp are called cannabinoids and the most abundant cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects of street cannabis, whereas CBD is non-psychoactive and provides many benefits to daily and chronic ailments.
There is a complex internal system in the human body that interacts with cannabinoids called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The endocannabinoid system (ECS)
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system that exists in every human body. Research is being thoroughly conducted to fully understand the ECS. But so far, we know it plays role in regulating a range of functions and processes, including:
- sleep
- mood
- appetite
- memory
- reproduction and fertility
Cannabis Vs Hemp
The major difference between Cannabis and Hemp is the strength and ratio of these two cannabinoids. Cannabis usually has a much higher content of THC, hemp usually contains very little THC and a much higher ratio of CBD. Many plant growers selectively breed hemp to increase its CBD content and decrease/eliminate its THC content so that people can enjoy the benefits of this ancient plant without getting "high".
Origin
Like with all plants, the quality and strength of active compounds and nutrients can vary greatly depending where it is grown, how it is grown and how it is harvested.
The rich soils of Australia are known to be amongst the richest in the world. Combined with the incredible Australian climate and strict agricultural standards, Australian grown plants are considered the highest standard globally.
Extraction
There are a number ways to extract cannabinoids from hemp and cannabis but many of these can damage the quality and overall purity of active compounds. The most common extraction method is C02 extraction and while this is efficient, it is not always the best. Alcohol extraction (using food grade ethanol) is considered the gold standard in extracting active compounds. Alcohol extraction preserves valuable terpenes and assures the highest purity and effectiveness of the end product.
